Booking Through Thursday – Niche
There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)
But then there are books that only YOU read. Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easy steps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring your house without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.
What niche books do YOU read?
Oh, this is easy. I read the following:
1. Photography – we have coffee books, a century worth of portraits, the best news photography, black and white, and a few books on improving your photography skills.
2. Web and graphic design books. Computer software books.
3. Interior Design books. You just can never be too inspired.
4. Travel books – the best places to eat, stay, have a weekend trip, long drives, honeymooners and family oriented vacation homes
5. Architecture. I just love all kinds of buildings and structures
6. “Books” on how to draw anime style. Books on watercolor painting.
7. Atlas. Oh yes. This is very essential to me now as I could easily get lost. Plus we are currently looking to buy a land for our future home so when a broker tells me that there’s an opening somewhere, I go and quickly consult my atlas.

I read a great book on architecture last year called Lost Buildings by Jonathon Glancey that discussed all the amazing buildings that have been lost to the world through war, natural disaster, political bungling etc. He also included fictional/mythical buildings that never were, but which are well known and buildings that were incredible, but never managed to make it past the planning stages. I don’t generally read architecture books, but this one was fascinating.
I am a keen amateur photographer and have quite a few photography books, but I never seem to get the time to sit down and study them the way I should. I guess I should make them more of a priority.
The “niche” topics I included in my BTT post are sewing, cooking, Australian history and railway history.
I love having an atlas handy, especially when we are planning our travels. It is great to be able to find things on the web too, but I find an atlas so much easier to get a quick idea of where one place is in relation to the rest of the world.
The best news photography? Thats one book I would love to see. I have a lot of computer books for work, I am interested in interiors too, but I mostly surf online. That way I can copy the picture I like and store it for future reference.

I thought I commented before…well.
You’re listed some great niche books there!
Happy BTT!
I forgot to mention Atlas. I have a few of those. Simply love looking at the atlas!

I love travel books. Here are mine: (1) and (2)
I’m so enjoying looking at all the responses to this question.
I forgot to mention travel books in my post… oops!
I listed travel books as well! I agree on the atlas. We have a giant one. Once anyone pulls it out, it a guaranteed lost hour flipping through it! Mine’s at http://amyreads.com/?p=167
I absolutely love your list. I’m with you on all of them barring Interior Design and Anime-books, just because I’m really not that fussed about interiors. Give me a desk, where I can place my laptop, and a bookshelf, and I’m set. I don’t even really need a bed!
I love books on photography, traveling and web/graphics design. I used to collect maps when I was younger, and I’ve almost invested in a couple of antique maps. Almost, but not quite…
I’m with you on all the design books. I’ve posted my BTT on architecture here!
